Worlds Apart returns to Playtime PR for new game launches

Worlds Apart has returned to toy and games PR specialists, Playtime PR, to handle the UK launch of Woofy Woops and Spin to Sing.

These two app-enabled games from Worlds Apart show a commitment to this category after a hugely successful inaugural launch into it with their sell-out SelfieMic™ last year.

To complement the robust marketing campaign in place the Playtime PR remit is to further drive both titles into the nations psyche. A combination of influencer engagement, product placement, proactive news generation and media relations has been created to ensure exactly that.

Woofy Woops is a hilarious family game where reactions to the action of the canine are captured on a smartphone. Selecting its victim at random the canine and the app-powered play creates slow-motion footage of his cocked-legged decision to be shared and create smiles aplenty.

Spin to Sing is a multi-player karaoke style game with each singer taking a turn on the microphone, recording their performance and others voting on how well they did. A selection of jeopardy cards give a twist to the game and, at the end, everyone gets to watch a montage of the best bits.

Winning Moves hands Top Trumps retainer to Playtime

Top Trumps’ owner, Winning Moves, has handed the brand’s consumer PR brief to specialist toys and games agency, Playtime PR.

Working closely with the Winning Moves marketing team, the agency is tasked with spearheading consumer-facing activity around the Retro range comeback, on-going support for new product launches for all games in the Top Trumps family, and formulating activations to celebrate 40 years of Top Trumps in 2018. Playtime’s strategy also encompasses international influencer relations, activity targeting specific fandoms, plus campaigns around specialist interest packs designed to engage vertical media outlets in niche sectors.

Exploding Kittens’ UK distributor, Morning Family, chooses Playtime PR

After securing the exclusive rights to distribute Exploding Kittens in the UK and Europe, French board games distributor and publisher – Morning Family – has handed its UK trade and consumer PR account to Playtime PR.

Founded in 2011, Toulouse-based Morning Family publishes and distributes a carefully-selected portfolio of games throughout Europe. Supporting all titles with innovative communications plans, the company has now enlisted the expertise of games PR specialists, Playtime PR, in the UK and is set to unveil a raft of new and licensed titles during 2016, which will see Morning Family firmly established as a serious player in the UK market.

Exploding Kittens

The company will distribute the first edition – complete with miaowing box – of the card game that made history when it became Kickstarter’s biggest success story. In addition, Morning Family will also translate Exploding Kittens for non-English-speaking European markets including Germany, Spain, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Obama Llama & Accentuate feature on ITV1’s This Morning

Obama Llama and Accentuate both featured heavily on ITV1’s This Morning show in a feature on the Best Board Games.

Big Potato’s Obama Llama had ITV1 presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in fits of laughter on Thurs 5 Nov as they played it on air as part of the This Morning’s Best Board Games for Christmas 2015 feature with Steve Wilson.

The feature also showcased Accentuate, the guess-the-accent party game for grown-ups – with Phillip seeming uncharacteristically nervous about sharing his own accent attempts with the nation!

Creator of Obama Llama, radio DJ Matt Edmondson, said “When I came up with the idea for Obama Llama, I could never have dreamed of it bringing out the hilariously competitive sides of Holly and Phil on This Morning. Seeing the game getting reviewed and creating such a big reaction was amazing.”

Achieving success as a board game inventor

The Inventors Workshop – uniting the architects of the next generation of play

When it comes to achieving success as a board game inventor, I’m told that coming up with the idea is the ‘easy’ bit. The hard bit is turning that idea into a physical product and then getting that product to market.

That’s why the team behind ToyNews launched the Inventors Workshop in 2014 – so that board game and toy inventors could be fast tracked to meet the industry experts who can help them take their ideas from sketch to store.

The event returns this year on 22nd September at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire and features a two-track half-day conference for fledgling and experienced inventors, followed by potentially life-changing One2One pitching opportunities with major manufacturers.

This year’s conference programme covers everything from funding and safety, to IP law, an insight into what retailers are looking for, how to use tech in toys and tips on how to pitch.

A panel session – How We Made It – features established toy and board game designers including Jenga’s Leslie Scott, Hasbro’s Dougal Grimes, Lego’s Samuel Thomas Johnson, the creator of Crazy Cart Ali Kermani and Gillian Logan, the inventor of Skinny Sketcher. They will share their stories, experiences and provide budding designers with valuable insight and inspiration into what it takes to become a successful inventor.

Panellist Gillian Logan was a delegate at last year’s event and was snapped up by a manufacturer on the day. Her Skinny Sketchers were showcased at Toy Fair in January and are soon to be available at retail.

The One2One sessions are pre-organised face-to-face meetings between the inventors and the toy companies. They allow designers to pitch their ideas to industry execs with the hope of getting their product started on the road to retail.

This year, Hasbro, Vivid, Flair, Cartamunid, Character, Sambro, Worlds Apart and Ooba are already confirmed for the One2Ones. More will be announced soon.
